Locations
The Wattisham area includes military facilities at the following locations:
- Wattisham
- Hadleig
- Thorington
and the main married quarter areas are 289 Service Families Accommodation (SFA) at Wattisham most of which are located just outside the camp. There is a mixture of both old and new houses, with the newer ones having attached garages. The allocations office is located at Barnham Camp in Thetford and a Housing Officer administers the estate.
Area Overview
Wattisham Airfield lies in a very beautiful part of rural Suffolk and the attractions of the countryside are on one’s doorstep. It is approximately 5 miles from the Town of Needham Market and approximately 8 miles from Stowmarket, both of which can cater for your everyday needs. There are also swimming pools, leisure centres, cinemas, theatres and many more amenities for both adults and children only a car journey away.
Children and Education

- Ringshall County Primary (3-9 yrs), Tel: 01473 658307. Approximately a mile and a half from Wattisham. For a small fee your child can take a bus to and from school booked through the Community Development Worker on 01449 728285.
- Needham Market Middle School (9 -13 yrs), Tel: 01449 720218. Approximately 5 miles from Wattisham
- Stowmarket High School (13-18 yrs), Tel: 01449 613541. Approximately 8 miles from Wattisham.
Transport and Travel
There is a local bus route from Wattisham to Stowmarket & Ipswich both of which have railway links to London Liverpool Street. There is also a service called Club 88 that will enable you to travel between villages and to main town to meet up with scheduled services.
The A14, which is a dual carriageway, will take you to the M11, A1(M), M1 and M6 and all points north. For those wanting to travel to the South the A14 takes you to the A12 and then onto the M25 at Brentwood
Pets
Medical and Dental
There is a Medical Centre for Service Personnel on Camp, for spouses and dependents the Needham Market Health Centre is the closest doctor’s surgery to Wattisham. The practice is open Monday to Friday.
Sports and Leisure
There is a wide variety of amenities at Wattisham Station they include a gymnasium with multi gym and cardio-vascular equipment, a swimming pool, squash courts, tennis courts, Library, education centre, golf club, gliding club, angling club, clay pigeon shooting club & sub aqua club.
Shopping and Tourism
There is a SPAR shop and Post Office located just outside the camp gates. The closest towns for shopping are Needham Market and Stowmarket, which have a good array of shops including Asda and Tesco. If you would prefer shopping on a larger scale Wattisham is only approximately 15 miles from Ipswich and 25 miles from Bury St Edmunds.
