Area Overview
Shrivenham is home to to the Defence Academy of the United Kingdom where the majority of of command, staff, leadership, defence management, acquisition, and technology training for members of the UK Armed Forces and MOD Civilian Servants. Consequently the Service Families Accommodation is primarily aimed at officers of OF3 and above.
Children and Education
There are a number of Nursery's located nearby, with Watchfield Nursery and the Cottage Nursery being the closest, it is strongly advised to put your child's name for Nurseries as soon as you can as here at Shrivenham the places fill very quickly! There are also numerous first, middle and secondary schools in Shrivenham and the surrounding area.
Transport and Travel
Pets
There are no additional restrictions on keeping domestic pets.
Medical and Dental
Servicemen and women register with the medical centre on camp. Dependants are required to register with a civilian doctor and dentist. Finding a local NHS dentist is extremely difficult. You can either look for one in Swindon or go private.
Sports and Leisure
In the Shrivenham/Watchfield area there are plenty of gyms/leisure centres to choose from. On camp there are two gyms, tennis courts, squash courts, all weather pitches, indoor sports halls, a riding stables (with a new indoor school being built), a golf course and an outdoor pool (used only in the summer(ish) months).
Faringdon Leisure Centre has an indoor pool, squash courts and a gym. It also has a great kids club for the school holidays. The days are packed with football, rollerblading/skating, swimming and arts and crafts for the children. There is also a triathlon club for children which meets regularly on a Saturday morning.
The Oasis in Swindon has a wave machine and water slides and regularly hosts gigs and comedy shows.
The Link Centre has just about everything from an Olympic size pool and a great climbing wall to an ice rink which is host to The Wildcats Swindon Ice Hockey Academy.
There are many Defence Academy sports clubs, which are generally very good value for money and (depending on the sport) will permit dependants to participate.
Shopping and Tourism
There is a small Coop shop just opposite the entrance to the Defence Academy. This can provide the everyday essentials. For the weekly family shop, you will have to venture further afield toward Swindon. There is a large Sainsbury about 15 mins away.
Swindon has the usual wide range of high street shops as well as good rail links to London.
