I lived on Severn Cres many moons ago, the houses have had double glazing and heating since then! They are RIGHT on the end of the old runway and in winter when the east wind comes in it HOWLS around there! Nice houses though if I remember rightly.

Area Overview

A posting to North Luffenham is a mixed blessing. The immediate area is nice enough; plenty of space for running, rolling countryside, Rutland Water Sailing club and pretty Stamford only a few miles away. It must be said though that it is a bit dull and like many RAF bases (now and ex RAF Army base) you're tucked away in the middle of nowhere-ish.

St George's Barracks is an old RAF base, complete with disused airfield and an enormous Officers' mess. It is situated between Edith Weston and North Luffenham in Rutland, which is the smallest county in England.

There isn't much to Edith Weston. It's a small village, with one public house, a small amenities shop, a Church of England Church and a primary school. Service personnel and their families form a large percentage of the local population.

North Luffenham village is approximately 5 minutes drive away from the camp; it is also a small village with 2 public houses, a shop, a Church of England Church and St Mary and St John CEVA primary school.

Children and Education

There is also a new Community Centre on camp with a large newly refurbished child's soft play area and internet suite, which also has an e fax-bluey and webcam facility.

There are two primary schools in the immediate area: Edith Weston primary school and St Mary and St John CEVA primary school (see map above).

Uppingham Community College is the main Secondary School for this catchment area, which is approximately 20 minutes away, and there is a school bus provided.

Other schools in the area are independent boarding/day Oakham school, the Catmose College state secondary school and the independent Uppingham School.

Adult Education is provided through Catmose College enrollment centre.

Transport and Travel

If you're posted to St George's Barracks a car is near essential, and living without one can get very claustrophobic. Oakham and Stamford aren't far in a car, but awkward by bus. Both Oakham and Stamford have railway stations of a similar scale. Kings Cross is about 1 and a half hours from Stamford on the fastest servcies (via Peterborough).

Sports and Leisure

At St George's Barracks there is a gymnasium and swimming pool, which is available for use not only by the service personnel but their dependants too.

Rutand Water is a popular dinghy sailing area with national level events regularly hosted by Rutland Sailing Club, the entrance to which is within walking distance of St George's Barracks. For those that have never tried, dinghy sailing can be an excellent family passtime with perfectly respectable and safe boats available for less than £1000, a short, comparatively cheap learning curve (the club organise courses) and a busy social life for all ages. It's also an ideal start for learning to sail larger boats and can be used as a preparatory stage for offshore sailing adventure training.
