Area Overview
Royal Air Force Honington has a history of being a major flying base that dates back to the 1930s but which today is the RAF’s main centre of Force Protection. The Station boasts approximately 2000 permanent service and civilian personnel but also accommodates a large number of personnel undergoing training at any one time.
RAF Honington is a busy operational station, but a welcoming one that has a great deal to offer whether you are working on camp, living nearby, or exploring local towns or countryside. We are situated midway between the main towns of Bury St Edmunds to the South and Thetford in Norfolk to the North.
Children and Education
Honington Primary School is situated in Honington Village, which is approximately a walking distance of 1 mile from the camp gates. A school bus is available for daily transport. Parents are required to take their children to and from the various bus stops located on the main road outside of the camp. The bus costs 50p per journey.
Ixworth Middle School (9 – 13 years) is approximately 2.5 miles from Honington.
Thurston Community College (13 – 18 years) is approximately 6 miles from Honington.

A bus route from Bury St Edmunds to Thetford serves RAF Honington. A bus departs from RAF Honington Bus Shelter to Bury St Edmunds every 2 hours from 0758, 0845 to 1812 inclusive.

The station (within the wire) provides a selection of amenities; a swimming pool and a well-equipped gymnasium, library, learning centre and hairdressers. Outside the wire you will find the Post Office Stores, purpose built Kindergarten, a Service Church, fish & chip takeaway, Chinese takeaway, hairdressers and pub.
Shopping and Tourism
Honington has a small Post Office & village store a few hundred metres from the camp gates, also available is a fish & chip shop and a Chinese takeaway. Further down the main road and closer to Woodside View & Honington Rise, Jackdaw Garage provides fuel, a large selection of goods and produce and fresh flowers. The village of Ixworth is approximately 3 miles away and boasts Theobald’s restaurant, a few pubs, a butcher, beauty salon and various other shops all situated on the main high street.
Sainsbury’s & Tesco are the large supermarkets found in Bury St Edmunds & Thetford. Waitrose is found in Bury St Edmunds only. Morrison’s is located in Diss.
