Area Overview

Herford is a 1200 year old town in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany, located in the lowlands between the mountain chains of the Wiehengebirge and the Teutoburg Forest. It is the capital of the district of Herford. For the number-lovers out there it covers an area of about 79 sqkm and has around 67,000 inhabitants (a tadge bigger than Durham depending where you draw the lines).

Herford station is proud of its Home Rhino Centre, the heart of the Station’s support structures.

Children and Education

There is one SCE primary school in Herford and one secondary school in Rinteln. An escorted school bus picks up from the quarter areas.

Pets

102 MWD Sp Unit offers both a vets clinic and boarding for dogs and cats in Paderborn. Contact staff on Sennelager Civil (05254) 3750. Dogs and cats are required to be fully vaccinated before they will be accepted.

Otherise contact a German 'Tierarzt' (literally Animal Doctor). One of the nearest to the station is: Dr Mahnkopf in 68 Bismarck Strasse,(05221) 928452.

Sports and Leisure

There is one cinema in Herford (Elisabethstr. 1a, 05221 15133) . All programmes are in German. Bad Oeynhausen has a UCI multiscreen.

Both Bad Oeynhausen and Bad Salzuflen are spas welcoming holiday makers, invalids and convalescents from all parts of Germany for treatment in the special baths. Both towns have beautiful parks, containing concert halls, bandstands and restaurants. An admission charge is made during the summer months.

Shopping and Tourism

Herford has a good selection of shopsfor a small town, but the adjacent towns of Bad Oeynhausen, Bad Salzuflen and Bielefeld all have very good shopping centres.

Jobs and Recruitment Agencies

The Herford Office of the Garrison Labour Support Unit (GLSU) is located outside camp in Kattenschling 8. If you are looking for employment in Herford Station this is one of the places you need to visit. There are various job opportunities ranging from any type of clerical and administrative employment to unskilled jobs like catering and cleaning positions. Vacancies are almost always available, either on a full time or part time basis.
