Area Overview
Henlow has been a ground-training base specialising in electronics since the end of the Second World War and was for many years synonymous with the RAF Signals Engineering Establishment (RAFSEE). The Station is now home to the Directorate of Engineering Interoperability (DEI), which is part of the Defence Communications Services Agency (DCSA) within the DLO.
In addition it houses the Joint Arms Control and Inspection Group (JACIG), HQ Provost & Security Services (RAF), including the newly-formed Tactical Provost Wing, the RAF Centre for Aviation Medicine (CAM) and No 616 Volunteer Gliding School which operates Vigilant T1 motor gliders.
Closest shopping town is Hitchin, easily accessible by car or bus. Also close to Luton, Stevenage and Bedford for bigger shops. Easy access to Central London by train from Hitchin.
Quarters vary greatly depending on where they are. I've lived in the ones overlooking the main parade square which are lovely, slanted ceilings, really cottagy but tiny kitchens. Also lived down on Southern Ave, HUGE quarters!!
Children and Education
The Whittle Childcare Centre has a creche and pre-school facility and is open 9-3 term time only. It is planned to open this facility full-time term-time only fron Sep 2012.
Derwent Lower School is located next to the SFA patch. The Whittle Childcare Centre runs an after school club for children over 4.
Local secondary school Samuel Whitbread College....I only did 6th form there but it was a good school, nice staff good facilities and a bus laid on from just outside the camp.

RAF Henlow has a wide range of facilities including a Interactive learning Centre, Golf course , Bowling alley, Gym, Swimming Pool, Hairdresser, Amateur Theatrical Society, Ju-Jitsu club, Royal Air Force Signals Museum, Library, Thrift shop, Rainbows, Brownies & Guides, Air cadets, Youth club, Rug rats under 5's group, After School Club.
