Area Overview

HMNB Clyde at Faslane is situated on the shores of the Gareloch, approximately 30 miles north of Glasgow on the West Coast of Scotland. This is an area of outstanding beauty with its many lochs and mountains. For those who enjoy hill walking or mountain climbing this is an ideal location. For the slightly less energetic there are plenty of places to take gentle walks, through woods, open countryside or by the lochs. However, you could always just sit back and admire the view.

Children and Education

There are a number of primary schools in the area which are all familiar with understanding the needs of Service families. There is a non-denominational senior school in Helensburgh and a Roman Catholic senior school in the next town of Dumbarton. The independent school, ‘Lomond’ is also popular with Service families. For those pupils with Special Educational Needs there is Parklands School. More info can be found on HIVE Info Sheets 3A ‘Local Education Overview’ & 3C ‘Schools and Colleges’.

Trains into Glasgow are every 30 minutes from Helensburgh, or 3-5 times a day to Oban on the Highland Line. National Bus companies operate from Glasgow’s Buchanan Bus Station, and local buses are every 30 minutes around the town.
