Area Overview

Haverfordwest can be said to be the gateway to Britain’s most westerly National Park along the Pembrokeshire Coast. The National Park offers rugged cliffs and islands, tree lined estuaries and open moorlands providing some of the finest scenery in Britain.

The town is a short walk from the service families accommodation and offers a range of high street shops, an indoor market, post office and banks as well as a choice of supermarkets. On the last Friday of the month there is also a Farmer's Market, which is held on the riverside complex.

On Camp there is a Londis shop, Library, Gymnasium – which is open to all.

Children and Education

There are a number of schools within easy access of the service families accommodation at Haverfordwest.

Prendergast Community Primary School Sir Thomas Picton

Transport and Travel

Haverfordwest is served by bus and rail locally and the nearest Airports are Swansea Airport and Cardiff International.

There is also a ferry service available from Pembroke Dock and Fishguard to Ireland.

Pets

There are plenty of areas to walk dogs. On Cashfields Estate it is possible to access a reasonably large field by cutting through a hole in the hedge on Cashfields Way. Further afield there is the Haverfordwest Race Course, although this is also a hang out for the local teenagers at night, so expect the usual rubbish to be scattered around (empty Red Stripe cans etc.). There is obviously the Pembrokeshire Coastal path and a series of beaches. Be warned; from April - September some of the beaches (or parts of) are out of bounds to dogs, it's best to check to be safe. There are at least 2 good quality vets in the area, one near the Hospital, the other by Tesco's (petrol station side). Berry Hill Kennels (http://www.berryhill.me.uk/) were recommended to me when I arrived in the area and I have never had any problems with them, they also offer a pick up and drop off service.

Medical and Dental

St Thomas Surgery (Civilian) Winch Lane Surgery (Civilian) Medical Centre (Block 487) Dental Practices are located around the town but all are Private.

Sports and Leisure

There is a new leisure centre just outside the town. It has all the usual gym equipment, pool, sauna, cafe etc. There are also classes run at various times. Membership for forces is £15.00 a month, which gives you unlimited access to all facilities.

Shopping and Tourism

Haverfordwest Town Centre – High Street shops, indoor market. Retail Parks (small) for electrical and DIY. Supermarkets – Morrisons, Tesco, Iceland, Lidl’s and Aldi. Pembroke Dock – Asda. Carmarthen is 30 mins drive away and holds a wider range of shops such a M&S and Monsoon. It has just been redeveloped with a 3D cinema, Debenhams, Frankie and Benny's etc.
