Area Overview
Harrogate itself is both cosmopolitan and elegant and has a great mixture of wonderful shopping, wining and dining combined with a glamorous heritage as a famous spa town. Explore and enjoy grand historic houses and awe-inspiring castles with their fascinating stories, Turkish Baths and monumental abbey ruins to name a few.
Both Uniacke (AFC) and Hildebrand Barracks (Families) both have their own HIVEs where you can find information on all the Unit facilities including a gymnasium (open to all), swimming pool (open to all), Learn Direct Centre, pre-school/crèche, community centre/Mums and Toddlers/youth centre (guides and rainbows), NAAFI shop, café, barbers and cash machines.
Children and Education
Penny Pot crèche/pre-school is co-located with the HIVE in Hildebrand Bks. New Park County Primary and Saltergate Infant & Junior School are well used by serving families and located within 5 minutes drive of the Barracks. There are 5 secondary schools within the catchment area: St Aidans, St John Fisher, Rossett High School, Harrogate Grammar and Harrogate High as well as a number of independent schools.
Transport and Travel
Monday to Saturday there is a regular bus service from Penny Pot, Burley Bank Road, going to Harrogate or Skipton. There is no bus service on Sundays or Public Holidays. There are excellent rail links from Harrogate train station (next to bus station) to Leeds or York. The nearest airport is Leeds Bradford which is 9 miles away.
Pets
Medical and Dental
Jennyfields or Killinghall Health Centres are mainly used by the families living at AFC. The Medical Centre within the camp (is for the sole use of serving personnel based at AFC and it operates a daily ‘open’ surgery as well as an appointments system. Serving personnel are required to use the dental services available through the Unit and for families the HIVE holds a list of local dental practices.

There is a NAAFI facility within AFC. The nearest local shops are at Killinghall Moor Estate (1.5 miles)consisting of a Co-op, hairdressers, Post Office, newsagent, and off licence. There is a great and diverse range of shops, including most high street chain and department stores in Harrogate and further a field in York.
