Area Overview

Edinburgh Dreghorn HIVE is situated on the southside of Edinburgh within Dreghorn Barracks. The resident battalion is the 1st Battalion The Royal Regiment of Scotland, The Royal Scots Borderers. Nearby, Redford Barracks houses the 3rd Battalion The Rifles. Others include 150 RMP, 52 Brigade at Edinburgh Castle/Redford Barracks and many other attached personnel including TA Units.

Children and Education

Dreghorn & Redford share the same catchment area for schools. Primary Schools for this area are Colinton and St. Mark’s RC; Secondary Schools are Firrhill and St. Thomas of Aquins.

Primary Schools for the Redhall and Longstone area are Longstone and St. Cuthbert’s, Secondary Schools are Firrhill and St. Augustine’s.

The Primary Schools are all within walking distance from the SFA, Secondary Schools may require a bus ride depending on where you are living.

The community centre in Dreghorn Barracks hosts "Mums and Tots", youth clubs, coffee mornings and lots more. The Army Learning Centre has a Satellite Access Point which soldiers and their dependents can use for learning or internet access.

Transport and Travel

Edinburgh has an excellent bus and train services and Edinburgh airport is only a short distance outside the City.

Serving personnel: MRS Medical Centre and Dental Centre are situated on Redford Bks.

Sports and Leisure

In Dreghorn Barracks there is a swimming pool and gym which is open to all soldiers and their dependents. The gym, which has two squash courts, can be used for football, circuit training, badminton and various other sports. A weights room and multi-gym can also be found there.

Shopping and Tourism

Local amenities are excellent while a wider range of shopping and entertainment facilities are easily accessed from the nearby Edinburgh City Bypass. There is a frequent bus service with buses serving many parts of Edinburgh including the City Centre.

Edinburgh itself is a beautiful city with many tourist attractions including the Castle and Holyrood Palace.

From Dreghorn and Redford the Edinburgh Bypass gives easy access to many shopping areas including the Gyle Centre, Hermiston Gate, Straiton with IKEA, Costco and Fort Kinnaird. Nearby at Oxgangs, Colinton and Morningside there are many small private shops for more immediate needs. Redhall & Longstone SFA are located close to Asda, B&Q, Tesco and local shops.
