Area Overview
Dishforth Airfield is located off the A1 between the exquisite North York Moors and Yorkshire Dales and close to the ancient cities of York, Leeds and Ripon and the Spa town of Harrogate. The small and bustling town of Boroughbridge is approximately 3 miles away and is the closest town to Dishforth Airfield with a leisure centre, doctor's surgery and a variety of shops and services. Within an hour drive is the beautiful Lake District, the seaside, the Metro centre in Gateshead and Meadowhall in Sheffield.
Facilities at Dishforth Airfield include a Defence Electronic Learning Centre (DELC), fully equipped gymnasium, Spar shop. The Service Families Accommodation (SFA) is spread across 5 small areas, all of which are situated outside the camp gates yet are within easy walking distance of all areas of the community.
Children and Education
Dishforth Airfield Community Primary, Short Rd, Dishforth Airfield (Civ 01423 322556) and Boroughbridge High School, Wetherby Road, Boroughbridge (Civ 01423 323540) are within the catchment area. There are other available schools within the surrounding villages although transport would be parents’ own responsibility. There are several independent schools in the area.
Transport and Travel
There is a regular bus service to and from most towns and cities in the area although many journeys do require a change en route. The nearest railway station is approximately 7 miles away in Thirsk and the nearest airport is Leeds Bradford which is approximately 21 miles away.

Medical and Dental
Church Lane Surgery in Boroughbridge is used by the families living at Dishforth. The centre offers a prescription dispensary service for the convenience of those living at Dishforth Airfield.
The Medical Centre within the camp is for the sole use of serving personnel based at Dishforth and it operates a daily ‘open’ surgery as well as an appointments system. Serving personnel are required to use the dental services available through the Unit.

Shopping and Tourism
There is a Spar shop in the JRC building within the camp gates and this is for the use of the whole community. Boroughbridge offers a wide range of convenience shopping and services which include Morrisons (24hr cash facility – Lloyds TSB, Abbey National, Nat West), Post Office, banks(Barclays, HSBC and Halifax) baker, florist, computer equipment shop, chemist, hardware store, offlicence, Spar (open late), newsagent, butcher and gift shops. Other services in the town include travel agents, estate agents, solicitors, hairdressers, library, optician, vet, beauty therapy and a variety of pubs.In addition, Sainsburys is in Ripon, 6 miles away and Tesco is in Thirsk, 7 miles from Dishforth. For general shopping, the cities of York and Harrogate offer a wider selection including most of the well known departmental stores. There is a petrol filling station at the Morrisons store in Boroughbridge.
