Locations

The Culdrose area includes military facilities at the following locations:

and the main married quarter areas are:

Clodgey Way Estate(Officers and Ratings)

The majority of the housing for Ratings consists of "Cornish Units" dating back to 1947. These pre-fab concrete units are cheap to rent and pretty large inside, 3 beds, kitchen, dining room, living room. But they're ugly to be honest.

There are a small number of terraced houses available, these are slightly more modern that the Cornish units but are a bit smaller and there is no dining room, just a larger lounge/diner area.

Housing for Officers consists of a number of detatched 3-bed houses that are spacious but dated. There are also a couple of larger houses for Lt Cdr and above.

Grange Road Estate(Ratings Only)

Nasty. Very small, pokey houses. Avoid if possible. (Sorry if you live there...)

Area Overview

NAS Culdrose is situated on the outskirts of Helston, an ancient market town that is the gateway to the Lizard Peninsula (Britain's most southerly point) in the west of Cornwall. The District is rich in scenery, history and culture and is a popular year-round holiday destination.

The town stands on the east bank of the River Cober which was once tidal before it was cut of from the sea by the Loe Bar sandbank in the 13th century. Perhaps Helston's greatest claim to fame is the internationally famous festival of the Furry, or Flora Dance. This is held every year on May 8th. Thousands of visitors throng the streets all day and there is a carnival atmosphere from dawn to well into the night.

Further a field are the towns of Falmouth, Penzance, St. Ives, Camborne and Redruth. The city of Truro, the administrative centre of the county, is 18 miles from Helston. Cornwall is a beautiful county with some of the best beaches in the UK and a wealth of attractions and activities to suit all ages and tastes.

Children and Education

The nearest Primary School is St Michaels(VC), and there are also schools at Parc Eglos and Nansloe. The only Secondary School is Helston Community College.

A pre-school nursery called Little Merlins is run at the Culdrose Community Centre on the Glodgey patch.
