The Chivenor area includes military facilities at the following locations:
The SFA for this Unit is located adjacent to RMB Chivenor, only a short walk from the main gates. There are 252 houses currently being used of which a small proportion are used for officers and the remainder for ratings and ORs. All SFA have modernised kitchens and bathrooms, central heating and double glazing.
Area Overview
RMB Chivenor is located along the beautiful North Devon coastline between the town of Barnstaple and the village of Braunton. There are so many places to visit within a few miles radius such as beaches, villages, market towns, craft centres, places of natural beauty, walks and attractions to suit everyone, families and single personnel alike.
Children and Education
There are 3 ‘Primary’ non-selective state community schools for girls and boys aged from 5 to 11 years and 1 ‘Comprehensive’ non-selective state community school for girls and boys aged from 11 to 16 years within a 2.5 miles radius. There is a dedicated school bus service from Chivenor to the ‘Comprehensive’ and one of the ‘Primary’ schools which are located opposite each other. In addition, there is one school for SEN children approximately 5 miles away and several private schools within travelling distance. There is 1 college in Braunton and 1 in Barnstaple both offering a wide selection of courses.
Transport and Travel
There is a reliable bus network covering the Chivenor area to Barnstaple, Ilfracombe and all locations in-between. The nearest train station is Barnstaple and the nearest airports are Bristol, Exeter and Plymouth.
Pets
Medical and Dental
For serving personnel, both the medical and dental centres are on camp. For dependants, Braunton has a well equipped medical centre with several doctors. It is normal practice to get an appointment the same day you call.
There are several dentists, mostly they only take on private patients however, occasionally they do increase their NHS patient list.
The closest hospital with an Accident & Emergency Department is in Barnstaple.

Shopping and Tourism
Braunton village is the nearest shopping area with a couple of supermarkets and many smaller shops (with lots of surf shops!!) but for a much wider selection of shops and merchandise, Barnstaple is the nearest town and is usually sufficient for most people. For the more serious shopper, and perhaps for Christmas shopping, Exeter is a favourite but is over an hour away by car.
