The Chester area includes military facilities at the following locations:
- Chester
- The Dale Barracks
and the main married quarter estate is located outside the wire and also has excellent facilities. Housing at The Dale consists of 18 officers and 184 other ranks.
Area Overview
The Dale Barracks in Chester is the current home of the 1st Battalion The Royal Welsh. It is a purpose built infantry barracks and is situated 2 miles from the vibrant city of Chester. Chester is located in the north-west of England where Liverpool and Manchester are very accessible. The Welsh border is also close by, so the coastal towns of Rhyl and Llandudno are within an easy day trip distance. Outside the main barracks gate there is an excellent bus route with direct links to the city, Cheshire Oaks designer outlet village and Liverpool city centre, as well as an excellent park and ride facility a short walk from the camp.
Children and Education
There is a children's playpark and an abundance of green open space. There is also a newly modernised community centre which is fully equipped with a kitchen, bar area and indoor children's play area. This provides a wide range of activities and clubs for children and families.
The Sunshine Under 5s pre-school is also situated on the SFA estate.
Transport and Travel
Chester has good public transport links and The Dale is on a main bus route to Chester, Ellesmere Port and Liverpool.
Chester is renowned for its excellent shopping. The city has a huge range of shops and although parking is expensive there are 3 park and ride schemes into the city centre. Cheshire Oaks Designer Retail Outlet is 4 miles from The Dale. There is a SPAR shop located inside the camp in the HUB area and there is a petrol station just outside camp which is well stocked and only 200 metres from the estate. There is a Spar shop, Post Office, DIY & Gardening store, Fish & Chip shop (which also sells Chinese food), Delicatessen, Barbers and Cosmetic Dental Practice just over a mile away from the estate.Liverpool and Manchester Airports are within 1 hours drive.
Pets
Medical and Dental
There are a large number of Doctors and Dentists in the Chester area. The City Walls Medical Centre is very popular with the current residents of The Dale.
The Countess of Chester Hospital is ½ a mile from The Dale with an A & E unit.
Serving Personnel are able to access medical and dental care at the barracks.
Sports and Leisure
The Dale Barracks has excellent on-camp facilities which include a gymnasium with airconditioned cardio-vascular suite and weights room, squash courts, a floodlit 5 a side sports pitch, landscaped areas, sports pitches, medical and dental centre, Army Learning Centre, SPAR shop and HUB bar and lounge area.
