Area Overview
Brecon is located on the A40 between Abergavenny and Llandovery. Historically a thriving market town now is changing with the times. The town sits under the gaze of Pen-y-fan the highest point of the Brecon Beacons. The location makes Brecon an ideal base for touring the Beacons, and certainly during the summer months tourists abound.

Transport and Travel
Airport – the nearest airport is Cardiff Airport (approximately 50 miles from Brecon – about one hour 15 minutes drive).
Bus Services – Brecon – regular bus services to Abergavenny, Cardiff, Merthyr Tydfil, Builth Wells, Swansea, Newtown and Hereford. National coaches also run to Cardiff, Newport and beyond.
Crickhowell – a regular bus service runs to Abergavenny, Brecon and Cardiff.
Trains – Abergavenny Railway Station – 20 Miles from Brecon (6 from Crickhowell) on the A40 outside the town.
Merthyr Tydfil Railway Station – in the town centre 18 miles from Brecon on the A470. Newport is the nearest main-line station (40 miles from Brecon, 25 miles from Crickhowell).

Medical and Dental
Service personnel attend the Medical Centre at Dering Lines for medical and dental care. Service Families should register with the local doctors for the area. Hospitals are also listed on the arrival information for families.
Sports and Leisure
Major banks and high street shops are closely grouped around the town centre. The regular Craft and Farmers’ Markets are popular with local people and tourists. Cafés, hotels and pubs are plentiful and there is an excellent leisure centre and a 2-screen cinema.
Dering Lines has a fully equipped gymnasium, squash courts, Army Learning Centre, Army Library Service Study Centre, Hairdresser, Londis Shop and RV-3, a shop that sells military kit. There is also a Community Centre. The Brigade Headquarters has a small gymnasium.
Shopping and Tourism
Morrison’s, Aldi & Co-op are the main supermarkets in Brecon. ASDA & Tesco are 20 miles away in Merthyr Tydfil and you will find plenty of High Street shops there and Abergavenny (which also has a Waitrose store). Merthyr Tydfil also has a new retail outlet park with TKMaxx, Next, Boots, Argos, B&Q, Matalan, JB Sports, Brantano, Outfit (which includes Dorothy Perkins, Wallis and Evans) and Desire at Debenhams.
