There are approx 280 SFA in Bovington with 100 of these located inside Allenby Barracks. Warminster is the location of the Housing Information Centre for this area

Area Overview

Bovington Camp in Dorset has been established as a Training Camp since 1916. The area surrounding Bovington is rural. Amenities within Bovington are limited so travelling to Dorchester (11 Miles) or Poole (13 Miles) is essential for Supermarket shopping and were you will find all major high street stores. Closer to Bovington is the village of Wool (2 miles). The Train Station there provides a vital link for travelling to Wareham (7 miles), which has a small high street with various local shops and Banks/Building Societies. The seaside resorts of Bournemouth, Weymouth and Swanage are all less than 25 miles away. Many former Military houses in Bovington are now owned by civilians. A community spirit has developed between the Military and Civilian population in Bovington and is proving to be successful one with many events being jointly organised and supported by both communities.

The only High School in the Catchment area is

  • Purbeck Comprehensive School for ages 13 – 18.

Locally funded transport is available for pupils living at Bovington and Lulworth.

The Nearest Specialist School is in Dorchester (9 Miles), the Penwithen School caters for children with learning difficulties and Emotional/Behaviour problems.

Transport and Travel

The nearest Railway Station is Wool (2 miles from Bovington). The Train service operates through from Weymouth to London stopping at Dorchester, Wool, Wareham, Poole, Bournemouth, Southampton, Southampton Airport, Winchester and Woking before reaching its final destination of Waterloo station in London. A forces discount railcard can be obtained from the Garrison Admin Office. The Wilts & Dorset Bus Company operates a bus service within the local area. There is a limited bus service on a Sunday. Because of the rural location it means some journeys by bus can often take 1 hour.

Medical and Dental

The Garrison Medical Centre provides all Medical treatment for Single Service/Married Personnel and Dependents. The Medical centre is located on Richard Hull Road.

The Dental Centre is for Service Personnel only. Dependents need to register with a NHS Dentist in the local area.

Sports and Leisure

The facilities on camp comprise the following: HIVE, AWS Community Office, Sure Start Families Centre, Community Centre with Mother and Toddler room, Spar Shop & Post Office, Cash Machine, Families Medical Centre, Garrison Church, Unit Welfare Office, Library & DELC, Hairdressers, Beehive Café, Launderette, Tank Museum and Gauntlet restaurant, Salvation Army Café, Chinese and Kebab Takeaways, Police Office, Cloudshill Pub/Restaurant, Thrift Shop, Swimming Pool and Gym, Tennis Courts.

Shopping and Tourism

The local Maze Shop is located on King George V Road opposite Allenby Barracks. The Post Office is to the rear of the Shop. This is the only shopping facility in Bovington. Wool has a range of small shops including a Spar, Bakery, Butchers, Hardware shop, Chemist, Newsagents. Wareham has similar shops to Wool as well as 2 mini Supermarkets, (Somerfields and Co-Op). Supermarkets such as Tesco’s, Sainsbury’s, Asda, Iceland, Lidl and Aldi can all be found in Poole, Dorchester and Weymouth.
