There are also 148 new SFA houses on the old HMS Daedalus site These are for both Ratings and Officers.

Area Overview

Gosport's peninsular location, with 17 miles (27km) of water frontage on Portsmouth Harbour and the Solent, offers a maritime playground second to none with all the facilities to match. It also means plenty of superb beaches and safe bathing waters. Scores of historic buildings and attractions are the legacy of Gosport's military history, yet this urban borough also has surprising areas of open space and natural beauty where you can enjoy the thriving wildlife and peaceful walks. A wide choice of shops, places to eat, famous pubs, and sporting facilities add to Gosport’s appeal.

Children and Education

There are 5 Infant, 5 Junior and 2 Secondary School’s, within walking distance, that serve the 3 Ratings accommodation areas. The Officers accommodation is served by 2 Infant, 2 Junior and 1 Secondary School. Most Schools are non-denominational but there is a Catholic Primary School in Gosport. There are also Schools in Lee on the Solent that are close to the Daedalus SFA. Gosport has 1 College providing a variety of post 16 education courses, and a number of local Independent nursery’s & School’s.

Transport and Travel

‘First’ have a very comprehensive bus service around Fareham and Gosport which includes a late night service. The nearest railway station is a 15 minute (off-peak!) drive away in Fareham, or take the ferry across to Portsmouth Harbour station. Southampton Airport has flights to National & International destinations regularly. Both Heathrow and Gatwick is approximately 90 minutes away, but your public transport links are in Portsmouth.

The Gosport Ferry links us to Portsmouth and there are ferries at regularly intervals throughout the day and night. Portsmouth Harbour Train station is just off the Ferry.

On the roads, there's only one way in and out. The peak time traffic is appauling at the best of times, and a short journey can take a long time!

Medical and Dental

Gosport and Lee on the Solent have several doctors’ surgeries covering the area. There is however, only a limited NHS Dental provision. (An access centre in Fareham is available). There are 2 hospitals in Gosport, one of which is Haslar Accident treatment Centre (minor injuries). The nearest A & E is Queen Alexandra Hospital in Cosham (about 25mins away). For Service Personnel, HMS Sultan has a Medical & Dental Centre.

Sports and Leisure

Gosport has something for everyone, with a range of living history attractions, plenty to do out and about on the waterfront, and local events throughout the year.

Shopping and Tourism

Gosport has 3 supermarkets which are situated close to the main town centre and has a variety of small shops which provide the majority of day to day items. Gosport has a small high street shopping centre, all of which is pedestrianised. It is home to a few chain stores along with some smaller independent shops, most Banks and Building societies and a large Post Office. A good sized market is held there every Tuesday and Saturday. Fareham is the closest town and is a short drive away; this has most major chain stores and good parking facilities. And you're just across the water from Portsmouth's Gunwharf Quays outlet centre.
